WE ARE STORYTELLERS AND WORLDBUILDERS

Founded in 2012, The R&D Studio is a content development studio based in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. We ideate and craft animation and live-action projects for film and television, with a focus on engaging storytelling and world-building.

Currently, we have an IP bank of over 100 projects spanning different formats and genres in various stages of development and production. We have sold 11 television projects and licensed 5 of the studio’s IPs to broadcasters.

A notable achievement for the studio is the production of the live-action television sitcom DISNEY’S WIZARDS OF WARNA WALK (2019) – the first long-form scripted television series by The Walt Disney Company in Southeast Asia. The multi-cam production was shot on two sound stages in Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios.

We always try to push the boundaries of storytelling and the art form. Our animated short films are inspired by the people, arts, and cultures of Southeast Asia. BATIK GIRL (2018) explored themes of love and grief through an original visual world inspired by the textile craft of batik. Another animated short film, THE DALANG’S TALE (2021), tackles the theme of domestic violence through visuals inspired by wayang kulit or shadow puppets.

The R&D Studio’s short films have gained recognition as official selections in over 90 film festivals around the world, as well as winning numerous awards.
